COVID-19 Policy Update 11/17/22

At our November meeting, the NBCDS Board of Directors reviewed our COVID-19 Policy to consider if it is still meeting our goal of limiting transmission of COVID-19 and other illnesses at our dances while also hosting events with sufficient attendance to advance our mission: To promote, preserve, study, teach and enjoy American and English folk and ritual dance, music and song. After discussing our Safety Committee’s recommendation, results from the 76 responses to the Fall 2022 Community Survey, and current scientific studies, we voted to retain our policy as-is for the winter quarter.

With the possibility of a winter surge due to increased travel over the holiday season and spending more time indoors, we will retain mandatory masking and the requirement of full vaccination with one booster, at least through the winter months. Based on experience at our own events and within dancing communities across the country, universal masking appears to be effective at limiting transmission of COVID-19 and other respiratory infections. The NBCDS Safety Committee, composed of four members representing both contra and ECD, reviewed scientific studies published in 2021-2022. Because viral loads do not vary significantly between vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, we are inclined to recommend removing the vaccination requirement in early 2023. We will review the policy again in February 2023.
