SUMMARY:San Rafael Contra
DESCRIPTION:Join us in 2023 at the UUCM on 2nd Saturdays 7pm to 10pm\nCaller: Susan Petrick\nBand: Corwin Zekley (fiddle) and Grace Fellows (piano)\nSound: Marty Brenneis \n  \nAn avid dancer for many years\, Susan Petrick started calling for contra dances in 2000 and teaching couple dances\, including waltz\, cross-step waltz\, and hambo\, shortly thereafter. Susan lives in Redwood City\, CA and has become a regional treasure with national prominence\, calling for dance weekends and festivals throughout the country. She is known for her clear teaching\, efficient guidance\, and expert pacing\, making even complex dances accessible to all. \n Corwin Zekley has deep roots in music\, having grown up in traditional & world music communities in Northern California. They’ve played violin for over 20 years with a degree from the Berklee College of Music\, have taught for a decade\, played over a thousand shows across the U.S and Europe\, and has appeared on dozens of records and published albums and books of their own music. \nCorwin is accompanied by Grace Fellows\, who is a diverse pianist and singer/songwriter from Ojai California. Grace grew up playing traditional folk musics on piano and violin\, and holds degrees in music from CalArts and the BIMM institute. Whether Contra and other traditional styles or her songwriting project\, Grace’s performances juxtapose her mastery of music with a sense of humor that walks the line between fun and therapeutic. \nVideo of Corwin & Grace playing for a virtual contra \n\nCurrently NBCDS requires dancers to be fully-vaccinated\, including at least one booster\, and dancers must be masked. Specific COVID protocols depend on the current CDC Community Level\, so check the NBCDS Covid page shortly before the scheduled dance to confirm. \nPlease bring your own water bottles. NBCDS events are fragrance-free. \nAdmission: $13 NBCDS/BACDS members; $15 not-yet-members; $8 limited income \n\n  \n
